What is the $5M Innovation Prize?

The Insurance Innovation Prize is a new $5M, government-backed prize to support teams working on insurance products and policies that fill gaps in the (re)insurance market for the energy transition. The prize was announced by New York Governor Kathy Hochul, and is supported by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority.

EXAMPLES OF PRODUCTS & POLICIES THE INNOVATION PRIZE SUPPORTS

We expect prize winners to span commercial and personal line insurance and a range of insurance objectives. The below is a representative list of hypothetical products or policies the prize might support. 

Commercial Line Insurance

Objective: Create new models for first- and nth-of-a-kind financing

Example: Pooling risk for green hydrogen production

Objective: Offtake risk to unlock project delivery

Example: Covering the financial risk of geothermal drilling

Personal Line Insurance

Objective: Create product benefits via insurance

Example: Guaranteeing revenue for rooftop solar
